Professor Zvi Rosen is recognized as a distinguished copyright researcher and historian. His early career was marked by significant contributions to IP scholarship, including papers on the history of U.S. federal trademark law and performance rights in copyright. Now Rosen, who joined the UNH Frankin Pierce 金莲直播 faculty as an associate professor in the fall of 2025, is expanding his duties at the school.

As the new faculty director of the Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property, Rosen is committed to continuing UNH Franklin Pierce鈥檚 longstanding tradition as a hub of IP scholarship and discourse. Having attended conferences at the school for many years and taught for a few summers at the Intellectual Property Summer Institute (IPSI), Rosen understands what makes the institution exceptional.

鈥淯NH [Franklin Pierce] has been a center of intellectual property scholarship and connecting IP, academia, and the broader world of intellectual property for generations,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 have a sense of what makes this place so great, and I want to continue that.鈥

Rosen鈥檚 plans for the Center include leveraging existing resources to bring faculty and students together with engaging leaders. He鈥檇 also like to explore the possibility of hosting a UNH Franklin Pierce event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Copyright Act, building on his involvement with the Peer Editorial Board of the Journal of the Copyright Society.

A 2015 Abraham L. Kaminstein Scholar in Residence at the U.S. Copyright Office, Rosen is renowned for his expertise on the historical development of copyright law in America. Prior to his arrival in Concord last fall, he served as an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School. A graduate of Northwestern鈥檚 Pritzker 金莲直播, Rosen previously taught at the George Washington University Law School, where he also earned an LLM in intellectual property; the Maurice A. Deane 金莲直播 at Hofstra University; and New York Law School. Prior to entering academia, he served as assistant chief counsel at the Small Business Administration鈥檚 Office of Advocacy and practiced at private firms.

In his year as a scholar in residence at the U.S. Copyright Office, Rosen focused on pre-1978 copyright records, working with the Library of Congress on digitization projects. This decade-long collaboration has resulted in the creation of electronic copyright records spanning from 1790 to 1870. His research led to notable publications, including 鈥淎n Empirical Analysis of 225 Years of Copyright Registrations,鈥 co-authored with economist Richard Schwinn, and 鈥淓xamining Copyright,鈥 which explores the history of the copyright registration process.

鈥淎nd people said, 鈥極h, yes, IP.鈥 That鈥檚 what people know us for, and it鈥檚 awesome for a New Hampshire law school to have this national reputation.鈥

Rosen鈥檚 current research demonstrates the continuing relevance of historical IP analysis. His forthcoming work in the Indiana Law Review traces the history of AI in copyright law, revealing that questions about the eligibility of AI-generated artwork for copyright registration were being addressed as early as the 1950s. He notes that the first computer-generated work was likely a string quartet written by a computer in 1956, and that the Copyright Office issued a policy statement on AI authorship in 1965 that essentially forms the basis of its current policy.

His scholarly background as a copyright historian allows Rosen to offer context for his students at UNH Franklin Pierce, where he teaches Property, Copyright, Trademark, and Fundamentals of IP. He typically dedicates time at the beginning of each class to discussing the latest developments in copyright policy.鈥疶his practice ensures that students are learning not just established law but understanding how the field is actively evolving. Meanwhile, his ongoing work, including filing IP-related amicus briefs with the Supreme Court and in lower courts, and membership on the Academic Advisory Board of the Copyright Alliance, gives Rosen direct access to cutting-edge policy discussions that he can bring directly into the classroom.

For the immediate future, Rosen鈥檚 goal through his role at the Center for Intellectual Property is to maintain and build upon the distinguished reputation of UNH Franklin Pierce as an IP powerhouse.

鈥淚 was in New Orleans for the AALS (Association of American Law Schools) Annual Meeting [in early January], and I mentioned that I teach at UNH Franklin Pierce,鈥 Rosen shares. 鈥淎nd people said, 鈥極h, yes, IP.鈥 That鈥檚 what people know us for, and it鈥檚 awesome for a New Hampshire law school to have this national reputation.鈥
